As some of my readers have correctly pointed out, not all the courtesans were as kind-hearted and noble souls as Glycera – and this is obviously common sense corroborated by facts… In truth very many are the examples of such greedy and unscrupulous women which can be found in ancient literature, actually – for the records… – they unquestionably exceed in number the loving and tender-hearted ones. Both ancient Greek and Latin literature profusely portray all different kind of concubines and prostitutes, often by stressing particularly in sarcastic and condemning tones their insatiability for richness, their absolute lack of scruples and their moody disposition and whimsical attitude.
Admittedly though, to their excuse, it must be said they were normally initiated to their art from a very young age often because of financial restraints, as Lucian of Samosata depicts in this following mime between mother Crobyle and daughter Corinna:
CROBYLE: … I [...]

Every cloud, they say, has a silver lining. While my computer was in the repair shop, I fired up my old computer, which I keep in the spare bedroom for my grandchildren to play games on when they visit.
When I’d done my work, I had a cruise around the hard drive, to see what I could find. For starters, there were two unfinished articles that I might finish up and find a home for, but mainly, I found half-forgotten pictures. Some of them are candidates for ‘Pic of the Week’ … or rather, Pic of the Month this time, as I’ll be in France on the weekend of the 20th, and Spain for the two weekends after that.
But, best of all, I found some more Silly Signs! The first of them is posted here … they sure have some tall plane spotters in East Anglia. Although I do take a [...]

Chapter 27
Of the Communion of Saints
1. All saints that are united to Jesus Christ, their Head, by his Spirit, and faith, although they are not made thereby one person with him, have fellowship in his graces, sufferings, death, resurrection, and glory; and, being united to one another in love, they have communion in each other’s[1] gifts and graces, and are obliged to the performance of such duties, public[2] and private, in an orderly way, as do conduce to their mutual good, both in the inward and outward man.
2. Saints by profession are bound to maintain an holy fellowship and communion in the worship of God and in performing such other spiritual services as tend to their mutual edification; as also in relieving each other in outward things according to their several abilities and necessities; which communion, according to the rule of the gospel, though especially to be exercised by them, [...]

LONDON (AP) — Baseball is as American as … tea and crumpets?
That may be case, according to a diary uncovered in southern England last year but only now being made public.
Julian Pooley, the manager of the Surrey History Centre, said Thursday he has authenticated a reference to baseball in a diary by English lawyer William Bray dating back to 1755 — about 50 years before what was previously believed to have been the first known reference to what became the American pastime.
“I know his handwriting very well,” Pooley told The Associated Press in a telephone interview, adding he believed the game wasn’t very common at the time. “He printed it to show it was new to him. He doesn’t mention baseball again. It was something that seemed special.”
Bray wrote that he played the game with both men [...]

Here are a few tips from cnn.com on enjoying one of the most fascinating (and expen$ive) cities in Europe.
You can sit in on debates in Parliament for free
Try the half-price ticket booth in Leicester Square for theater tickets
College dorm rooms provide bargain lodging during the summer
To save money buy an Oyster card — an electronic card that serves as your ticket. You get reduced fares for a single trip — down to about $3 from $8 for a Tube trip within the central city and $1.80 instead of $4 for a bus ride.
Budget hotels are clustered near train stations, especially Paddington, Victoria, Euston and King’s Cross. The Earl’s Court neighborhood is another option. Book early.

Women ‘more prone to nightmares’
Dreaming occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep
Women experience significantly more nightmares than men and have more emotional dreams, research suggests.
In a study of 170 volunteers asked to record their most recent dream, 19% of men reported a nightmare compared with 30% of women.
Researcher Dr Jennifer Parker of the University of the West of England said there was no difference in the overall number of dreams reported.
Other research has shown women tend to have more disturbed sleep than men.
One factor which has been linked to this is changes in a woman’s body temperature during her monthly cycle.
Women’s sleep tends to be more disrupted and they have more insomnia
Dr Chris Idzikowski, Edinburgh Sleep Centre
Dr Parker, a lecturer in psychology, said it has been known for a long time that pre-menstrual women report more vivid and disturbing dreams.
“The consistent finding in this research [...]

First assignment for UK Street Art. We headed on down to the Lazarides and Paul Insect ‘Poison’ exhibition in Kings Cross. The venue used to be Turkish baths, then a book(sex)shop and then a photography studio. Finally it came to use for Insect’s great artwork on September 11th.
